The Golly Person of Colour

I made this Golly Person of Colour for my friend's 40th. He has a boat, see, and it's called "The Golliwog". That's what it's called.

So blog-readers, I need your opinion. Do you like the smile with teeth? Or the plain old smile. Simon and I can't agree on how he should be finished.

I know these little chaps were considered deeply offensive for a long time, but I hope they aren't anymore. I always kind of liked them.

  2. I say go with the teeth! He's great :) We had a small child sized golliwog growing up, but he had lost some stuffing along the way because he was very floppy!

  4. I think Golliwogs are fun. It was probably just the reference to black people that made them offensive. I'd like to see them make a bit of comeback too. I do like it better without the teeth though.

  5. Look at that grill! I love him with his teeth. Hard to believe he could smile that much without showing his teeth.

  11. I LOVE gollis. I was into making them a year or so ago but made the mistake of asking the (no0rmally) very friendly quilt shop owner idf she had any patterns... She was offended and said no in a kind of drawn out sucking on a lemon kind of a way... When my next doll making surge begins again (These things are cyclical) I want to do a Mammy doll if I can find a pattern in NZ! Im of the impression uyour Golli shouldnt have teeth but now having written this I think yo ushould include it)
